3/15 Weekly Message

Good evening Riverside parents, this is Principal Tonya Williams with your weekly message.

As you have heard by now, Durham Public Schools is closed for the next three weeks.  This week will operate as Spring Break for our school community.

We had one day to prepare for school closure, and our teachers, ever the professionals, went into overdrive to ensure they had a way to communicate with students while school is closed.  If your child was absent on Friday, please have them email their teachers directly to provide an email address and phone number.

As stated, this week is Spring Break, so teachers will begin remote learning opportunities for students on Tuesday, March 24.  Teachers will provide remote learning in a variety of ways including Google Classroom, videos, conference calls, and other innovative methods.  If you do not have access to WiFi internet access, Charter Communications announced that beginning March 16, it will make its services available for free for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who don’t already have internet through the company.  Call 1-844-488-8395 for more information.  We recognize that there are many different family dynamics and that there may be barriers to completing assignments.  I ask that you communicate directly with your teachers regarding this information.  If a teacher has a unique situation that prevents them from providing learning opportunities during this time, then they will have their out of office email message on, so parents and students will know not to expect any return communication.  We want to be sensitive to all needs in our school community while continuing to provide educational opportunities.

I have had many parents reach out to me regarding providing meals to students and families during this uncertain time.  Thank you for your care and concern for our entire school community.  Durham Public Schools is working diligently to develop a feeding program during this time.  One way to assist is by donating to the Durham Public School Foundation at bullcityschools.org.  They will assist DPS in coordinating these efforts.  I will share more information when I have it.

Thank you for your patience during this time.  If you have any direct questions for me, then feel free to email me at tonya.williamsleathe@dpsnc.net.

I hope everyone stays safe during this time of social distancing.  As always, Roll Pirates Roll.
